The War of the Spanish Succession (1702-1714) ended with the siege and fall of Barcelona on the 11th September 1714. The military occupation of the country was confirmed by the Decree of Nova Planta of 1716. All civil and military power was placed in the hands of the Captain General, who also presided over the Audience. A new institution, the Intendencia, was made responsible for new taxes, such as property tax.
