The exhibition “Art Nou català” (New Catalan Art), which was held in Sabadell in August 1915 as part of the Town Festival, is one of the landmarks in modern Catalan art. The promoter of the exhibition was the poet Joaquim Folguera, the figure behind the most important ventures in Sabadell at that time. He worked in tandem with Eugeni d’Ors and also enlisted the support of the Centre Català, a regionalist organisation whose founder, Manel Folguera, was one of the most influential figures at that time.

The exhibition affected everyone and was cause for a lot of controversy, above all from the members of the Acadèmia de Belles Arts de Sabadell and some of the Sabadell painters who were most open to new artistic trends who felt excluded from the New Art exhibition. The Academic artists organised an alternative Exhibition, open to local artists such as Joan Vila Cinca, Antoni Estruch and Rafael Durancamps.
