Portrait:
One of the most frequent topics of the Academic painters were portraits, the success of this genre was linked to the emergence of the powerful industrial bourgeoisie who commissioned portraits to show their status.
Josep Domènech (Sabadell, 1874-1900) studied at the Escola de Belles Arts de Barcelona and specialised in genre painting. Unfortunately he left us with very few works, as he died very young. Domènech was a painter of great promise, and according to Antoni Vila Arrufat, “his drawings show great restraint and remind us of Puvis de Chavannes”.
