This aureole, traditionally known as a diadem or crown, was an offering from the Constable of Portugal, Pere IV, to the Mother of God of Castelló d’Empúries in 1465, within the context of the war in the Empordà. The commission was awarded to Pere Àngel, an Italian silversmith living in Sant Feliu de Guíxols who had been working in Girona for 40 years. In the shape of a crescent moon, from which rays with stars emerge from the tips, only the front of it has been decorated, with pearl mouldings and plant and floral motifs. In the centre, an angel holds a shield with the Catalan stripes and, at the top, there’s an embedded stone bordered by the inscription Paine pour joie (suffer to enjoy), a chivalrous motto adopted by Pere IV.
