During the Palaeolithic, methods were developed to produce more or less uniform stone flakes. To obtain them, a block of stone was cut in accordance with a set of predetermined steps and a preconceived method. Eventually, these flakes with broad cutting edges were used directly, or else prepared by knapping the edges for a specific function.
