We are now in front of one of the mosaics found in the Roman villa of Can Pau Birol, present-day Bell-lloc del Pla, Girona. The key to this mosaic can be found in the man’s hand. What is he holding? It’s a skein or an apple?, the experts can’t agree, even though there’s good reason to believe that the mythological scene described by the 3rd-century-AD artisan is that of Theseus and Ariadne (the piece would be a skein). Whichever it is, there can be no doubt that the meticulously laid pieces of the mosaic were part of the sumptuous decoration of the home of an important Roman family.
