The Baroque altarpiece in Santa Maria church in Arenys de Mar, which was declared an asset of national cultural interest, was crafted between 1706 and 1713 and is the work of the sculptor Pau Costa and the gilders Erasme and Fèlix Vinyals.
Recently restored, it is one of the best examples of the Catalan Baroque. With a height of 18 m, it stands out for the richness of its decoration.
The central panel depicts the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, and next to her are scenes from the Virgin’s life. On the upper part is Saint Zeno, the patron saint of Arenys de Mar, and on the four sides are Saint Francis Xavier, Saint Peter, Saint Paul and Saint Joseph.
