Antoni Viladomat i Manalt (Barcelona, 1678-1755) painted scenes to decorate the rooms of wealthy family homes in Barcelona in the 18th century. He readily adapted to the tastes of society at that time. Even though he often worked with ideas and forms adopted from other traditions, his works always show a clear intent to soberly describe the landscapes and figures around him in a realistic way.
In the painting La tardor (Autumn), costumbrism and landscape painting converge to depict an afternoon during the grape harvest in idyllic setting, although it is not too difficult to associate the background with a specific Catalonian landscape.
