Sailor’s chests were, by popular tradition, the baggage system used by seafarers, and mainly sailors.
Most chests were muliticoloured with scenes painted inside of the lid, and they were used as small altars or reminders of life on terra firma.
The most traditional iconography was civil, and this makes the MATBC’s sailor’s chest really unique, as it is decorated with the scene of the Last Supper and, on the side inner lid, with a character dressed from the period, smoking a pipe.
