Located on the main altar of the Sant Esteve church, the Gothic altarpiece of Our Lady of L’Escala is by Joan Antigó, known as the mestre de Banyoles,  who built it between 1437 and 1439. The altarpiece consists of five vertical sections: the four lateral ones show scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary, while the centre section features a polychrome alabaster sculpture of Our Lady from the 14th century. The cost of the altarpiece was 200 florins.
