Some of the grains cultivated in Aran were rye, wheat, buckwheat, barley and corn

The first known written reference to this ancient grain measure is a document from 1175. In March of that year, King Alfonso I granted the Aranese the Treaty of Amparanza in the monastery of Sant Andreu de Barravés of Vilaller in the Ribagorza. Under this treaty, the Arans recognized the King of Aragon as their natural lord, and in return, the king took them under his wing and guaranteed their secular freedom in exchange for a tribute, the galin reiau. This tribute consisted of the annual payment of this measure, equivalent to 10.5 litres, by each home or household.
