This is one of the masterpieces of European Romanesque art. Its brilliance is due to its combination of elements from different Biblical visions - the Apocalypse, Isaiah and Ezekiel - to show us the Christ of judgement Day. He emerges from the background to set the centrifugal force of the composition in motion, which is dominated by the ornamental sense of the outlines and great skill in the use of colour to create volume. The exceptional pictorial force of this work by the Master of Taüll has reached out to the modern world and fascinated artists of the 20 th century avant-garde such as Picasso and Francis Picabia.
