The rug is used in the ritual for prayer, usually in Islam. It is decorated with geometric shapes, floral motifs, prayer symbols and the mihrab, which is the rectangular design in the centre of the rug. The mihrab must point to the Kaaba, in Mecca, during the prayer ritual. It is an important symbol of the religious diversity of the region and of the religious communities that live together there.
