The MhiC (Museum of the History of Immigration in Catalonia) opened its doors in 2004 in Sant Adrià de Besòs. It’s a monographic museum dedicated to migratory heritage and memory. From the perspective of a municipal museum, it seeks to address the global reality of human movements and migrations and their transformational impact on the host community.
The MhiC proposes a tour of three permanent exhibition areas which jointly recount the migratory processes from prehistory until the 21st century in a generic manner. It’s a 21st-century museum with a markedly social and educational purpose. The creation of the Museum's collection is open and participatory. It’s built upon the basis of the materials and testimonies provided by the visitors and groups that participate in the museum’s activities and in its virtual space.
The museum is managed by the Department of Culture of Sant Adrià de Besòs City Council and is part of the Network of Museums of Ethnology of Catalonia, the Barcelona Provincial Council Local Museum Network and the ICOM Network.
