Joan Llaverias i Labró (Vilanova i la Geltrú, 1865 - Lloret de Mar, 1938)

Founder member of the Cercle Artístic de Sant Lluc, he was trained as an illustrator and painter at the height of the modernista period. His early work as an illustrator appeared in magazines such as LecturasandHispania. As a painter, in 1896he switched from oils to watercolour, contributing to the recovery of this technique in Catalonia. Even so, he achieved popularity with his humorous drawings and illustrations.

He was a keen sailor and navigated the entire Catalan coast between Tarragona and Cadaques in his own sailing dinghy. He is regarded as the discoverer of the potential of the Costa Brava as a subject for painters. He supplemented his limited income as an illustrator by teaching; Lola Anglada, Josep Maria de Togores and Valentí Castanys were among his pupils.

He contributed to satirical journals, mainly Cu-cut!, and children’s magazines such asEn Patufet, where he was noted for his animal drawings.

Here we offer a selection of his palettes and sketches.
