Landscape, Vladimir Veličković, 2001, oil on canvas. The Stämpfli Foundation.

Vladimir Veličković (Belgrade, 1935) is a Serbian artist living in Paris. He lived through the Nazi atrocities in Yugoslavia during the Second World War.

Landscape is a prisoner of the very world the artist has lived within, with the darkness, the choice of colours and the distorted human figure, thrown wounded to the ground.

This piece could recall the transformations of Francis Bacon, with this desolate territory and land without vegetation, with the crows picking away on it, and even the holes, which have to be destroyed by war. This is clearly a work grounded in a setting of tragedy.
