The opening carder transformed the tufts of wool opened by the diable into a batting, called nappe. This batting was also used to make quilts and mattresses.

The carded wool from the devil was placed on the conveyor belt, which ran the wool between a larger central drum and other smaller one located above it. The central wool drum moved forward, while at the same time, the upper drums combed it to obtain the nappe, which was finally placed on the drum.
