The strand carder was responsible for transforming the batting or nappe from the opening carders into small, delicate strands.

The nappe was placed taut over the conveyor belt and, following the same procedure as with the carding was inserted between the central and upper drums. They once again combed the nappe into thin strands on small iron spikes. These strands were removed by another drum and manually attached to a cylinder that rolled on small rollers or metal folders.
