At the beginning of the 20th century, photography was still an imperfect tool for gathering detailed information about complex objects such as ships. In order to take clear, sharp pictures, you needed good lighting and the total immobility of both the camera and the object you wanted to photograph. This was difficult to achieve when trying to document ships.

Drawing was, therefore, a more interesting option, since it allowed you to represent and highlight details that would have gone unnoticed in a photograph. It also allowed you to copy the colours used to decorate the ships. Wherever possible, Emerencià Roig collected the objects directly, or got hold of miniatures of the latter. If this were impossible, he drew them.
