The lifeline launcher worked as follows:  the tripod was placed with the launcher pointing towards the schooner which needed rescuing. It had a rocket inside measuring about 8 cm in diameter which was attached to the prepared rope or line. It fired the rocket, which had to pass between the masts of the ship, and the rope was gathered up by the crew. This established connection between the land and the  ship. Then they communicated using flag signals and mounted the lifeline system to transport the people, one at a time, using life rings. It took around 3 minutes for each person.
