The cremalls, or fire irons, were used to hang cauldrons and pots over the wood fire in the open hearth. Made by local blacksmiths, many of them from the 18th and 19th centuries had allegorical symbols and geometrical figures forged or scored into their decoration, whose degree of refinement would have been yet another outward sign of the family’s social status.
