Skates or lúbies, as they are known in the Val d'Aran, were used to transport different materials, such as rocks, soil, feed and manure.

The lúbies were pulled by oxen and there were three types, depending on the loads they were pulling: a box, with side supports for loading or unsupported.

The skate system was very common in mountain areas as a result of the poor condition of the roads and trails. The use of skates with wheels came later, when the roads and trails were better suited for road transport.
