Hucha (bridal chest)

The grains grown in the Val d’Aran included wheat, corn, barley, buckwheat and rye

The huches were large wooden chests with lids where the grain was kept until it had to be ground.

Of the many chests we find in the Joanchiquet attic, only one is an hucha; the rest are bridal chests repurposed to store the grain.

Bridal chests were used to transport and store the dowry after the wedding. The dowry might contain linen, sheets, furniture, jewellery, money, etc., depending on the economic status of the bride’s family.
