This painting by Modest Urgell i Inglada (Barcelona, 1839-1919) depicts the churches of Sant Pere de Terrassa seen from the Santa Maria rivulet. This is work from the painter’s mature period and must date from before 1894, when it was donated to the city.

The artist, a pupil of Ramon Martí i Alsina, was influenced by the landscapes of Joaquim Vayreda and the French Realism of Gustave Courbet.

Modest Urgell regarded himself as a Romantic painter, even though he did not invent his landscapes. His intention was to convey the feelings and states of mind they produced in him.
