Our Lady of Sant Cugat, 13th century, polychrome wood carving, 92 × 41 × 28.5 cm. Castell Cartoixa de Vallparadís. Terrassa Museum.

Our Lady in majesty seated on a throne of four columns. This is one of the few reliquary carvings of the Virgin preserved in Catalonia. It is also the earliest known Romanesque carving in Catalonia of the Virgin to have an exact date: August 12th 1218.

A restoration recovered the original polychrome and discovered a hiding place with twelve reliquaries wrapped in sackcloth and cloth fragments, as well as ten pieces of parchment written in Latin.

The piece comes from the Monastery of Sant Cugat del Vallès. It was acquired by the Terrassa Museum in 1924 as a bequest by Josep Soler i Palet.
