The Cau Ferrat in Sitges is one of Santiago Rusiñol’s most important creations. Painter, collector, writer and playwright, Rusiñol assembled, at his home in Sitges, the diverse collections he started while still in his teens and that he kept in the atelier he shared in Barcelona with his friend, the sculptor Enric Clarasó. This year we are celebrating the one hundred and twenty-fifth anniversary of the inauguration of the Cau Ferrat in Sitges on November 4th, 1894. On that day, Rusiñol, accompanied by an important delegation of the most outstanding representatives in Catalan culture, moved two works by El Greco there that he had acquired shortly before in Paris.
The diverse activities carried out at, or organized from, the Cau would make Rusiñol's home in Sitges the epicenter of Catalan Modernisme. This exhibition aims to explain the origin of this project, its consolidation and its main raison d’être: the assemblage of the painter’s different collections, as an expression of Total Art.
