Fish Mosaic, found at the villa of Callipolis, 3rd century AD, opus tessellatum, 4.5 × 6.25 m

A rendering of fish and other marine species that decorated a room in the Roman villa of Callipolis, in the municipal district of Vila-seca.

The mosaic field is decorated with  47 images of sea creatures from the Mediterranean, generally fish but also crustaceans, cephalopoda and mammals it has been possible to identify.

It belongs to the type of composition found in African mosaics, in which the scene occupies the entire surface, in contrast with the Hellenistic tradition of creating small independent compositions (emblemata) framed by a geometric patterns.
