Fragment of flooring with an inscription of welcome, 1st century BC - 1st century AD, opus signinum and inscription in tesserae, 39 × 107 cm

Fragment of an opus signinum floor featuring the epigraph ‘AVE SALVE’ (‘Welcome’), made of white marble tesserae. Discovered in the Pedrera del Port de Tarragona in 1857, it was on the threshold of a door inside a Tarraco domus. Such welcoming inscriptions were fairly common at the entrances to homes or rooms.
