Clipeus featuring the divinity Jupiter-Ammon, 1st century AD, marble from Luni-Carrara, 120 cm diameter

A medallion (clipeus) featuring Jupiter-Ammon (a syncretic deity that fruit ofthe encounter between of Roman and Egyptian cultures). It bears the iconographical attributes of Jupiter, the supreme god of the Roman pantheon (a mature man with a beard) and the Egyptian god Ammon (with ram’s horns). Along with other medallions portraying Medusa and alternating with caryatids, it formed part of the decoration of the aattic of the religious precinct in Tarraco, in imitation of the side portals of the Augustan forum in Rome.
