Marcus Aurelius

Portrait of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, 2nd century AD, Luni-Carrara marble, 29 × 26 × 25.5 cm.

Portrait of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, 2nd century AD, Luni-Carrara marble, 29 × 26 × 25.5 cm.

Portrait of the young Marcus Aurelius, from the Tarraco Colony Forum.

There are four types of portrait of Marcus Aurelius, dated in comparison with his effigy on coins. This head belongs to the second type, created in 144 AD, one year before his marriage to Faustina the Younger. He still appears as a young man here. This type of portrait was the official one - for political reasons - while he was heir to the Empire and was replaced only when he took the throne on the death of Antonius Pius.
