Lamp with a theatrical mask

Oil lamp decorated with the representation of a theatrical mask on the handle, late 1st century - 2nd century AD, bronze, 21 × 11 × 27 cm.

Oil lamp decorated with the representation of a theatrical mask on the handle, late 1st century - 2nd century AD, bronze, 21 × 11 × 27 cm.

A bronze lamp made at an Italian workshop found in the Roman villa of La Llosa (Cambrils).
An oil lamp with a single burner, one opening for the wick and another in the centre for refilling with oil. Particularly striking is the handle decorated with the splendid representation of a theatrical mask, a relatively common motif throughout the Roman Empire.
It would have been part of the bronze furnishings of this important Tarraco villa.
