Fragment of a monumental krater with Bacchus and Silenus, 2nd century AD, marble, 51 × 176 × 58 cm.

This fragment of the top of a monumental vessel discovered in 1971 in the area of the Provincial Forum of Tarraco (Plaça del Fòrum) is made of white marble.

It is decorated with a rendering of the god Dionysus/Bacchus-- or a young satyr-- and of the figure of aged Silenus, one of the god’s entourage, associated with wine and fertility. Both characters wear crowns of ivy leaves, vines and grapes.
