Portrait of Emperor Claudius, 1st century AD, white marble, 30 × 20 × 24.5 cm

Portrait from the seat of the Schola of theCollegium Fabrum of Tarraco. The hairstyle and distinguishing facial features make this portrait instantly identifiable as one of the Emperor Claudius. Even so, this example from Tarragona is characterised by a certain degree of idealisation in comparison to other portraits of this emperor, which are more personal and truer to his real age. This leads us to suppose that it was executed shortly after his rise to the imperial throne (41 AD).
