Súplica, Ismael Smith i Marí, no date, ink and watercolour on paper, 23.5 × 17 cm

Ismael Smith Marí (Barcelona, 1886 - White Plains, New York, 1972) is one of the finest illustrators of his day, with a very personal, full iconography. The pursuit of beauty and at the same time the threatening presence of lust, monstrosity, decay, degeneration and metamorphosis are constant in Smith’s work. The misfortune, excess, delicacy and sexual ambiguity that he clearly projected in his works, and even the madness associated with creativity, make Ismael Smith a very appealing, modern character.
