’Guayaquil’ corvette, Josep Pineda Guerra, 1892, paint on paper

Seascape showing the corvette Guayaquil, flying the flag of El Masnou. It is sailing to the right close to the coast (which can be seen in the background, on the horizon) with sailors working on deck. Sailing ships may be seen on both sides.

The artist from Valencia Josep Pineda Guerra (Alicante, 1837 - Barcelona, 1907) was a seaman by profession. His work, which focused mainly on ships, is acknowledged for the faithful rendering of his subject matter. His paintings therefore constitute a major source of information on the merchant shipping fleet of Catalonia at the end of the 19th century.
