The hydraulic wheel converted water into energy. This wheel has a horizontal axis, and when the sluice gate just above it is opened, the water falls from the canal onto the wheel. This causes each of the paddled sections in the water wheel to be filled one by one. The continuous supply of water makes the wheel turn, and inside the mill the glazing hammer starts working.
