The shredding mallets were made of wood and were connected to the hydraulic wheels via camshafts. The mallets beat the mixture inside the troughs, large stone recipients where rags were introduced and shredded into paper pulp.

There were three different types of mallets: those for rags, with sharp spikes; beating mallets, with rounded striated spikes; and the refining mallets, without spikes. The process lasted between twenty and thirty hours.
