In the 19th century, state intervention to foster education increased the number of schools and readers. The printing industry was overwhelmed by the rising demand for traditional books, newspapers and publicity. In this context, in order to increase and improve production, a series of important changes took place: mechanical composition was introduced and press printing, which had not undergone significant changes since Gutenberg, was automated.

Around 1800, the wooden press was replaced by the Lord Stanhope press, made of iron. With this new press, more than 200 impressions per hour were achieved.
