In 1860 Isabel II travelled to Barcelona from Madrid and it was thought she might visit the Salt Museum. If she had, she was going to be presented with this bust of herself but, in the end, she never got to the town of Cardona, and the bust remained at the Salt Museum. It is the work of the sculptor, painter and miniaturist Lluís Vermell i Busquets, the so-called Peregrino Español, or Spanish Pilgrim, who was a good friend of Father Riba, the founder of the Salt Museum. The bust is sculpted in rock salt, a colourless mineral when it is in its purest state, but showing a variety of colorations when it contains impurities such as clay, iron oxide or sulphates.
