Dolls are one of the most common toys from every time period and culture. In Catalonia, one of the most well-known dolls is the Catalan "Pepa" doll. Made in the late 19th century from painted cardboard, the doll had jointed arms and legs, and wore a simple fabric dress. The doll was characterised by hard heels.

The Catalan "Pepa" was manufactured in many different sizes, from around fifteen centimetres to one meter in height; with the corresponding variation in price. The fact that this doll was affordable for all budgets made it very popular.
