Socks made of a plain jersey knit which combines blue parts on the outside with brown parts on the inside, forming vertical stripes. The knee band is made of ribbed knit. The mechanised production of socks signalled an extraordinary technological leap for the era, given that until then knitting socks was a manual process. Socks used to be held up on the leg with leg braces or laces. In the late 18th century, socks woven with coloured thread started to be popular, as did socks embroidered to match the clothing.
