A fish belonging to the sardine family that lives in the sea and swims into the Ebro to spawn. The lower stretch of the river was a valuable fishing ground that attained a certain commercial importance from the Middle Ages. Today, dams and pollution –among other factors– have led to their virtual extinction, although in recent years their numbers have increased in the final stretch of the river.
