The coal oven, popularly known as an economical oven or "puela", was an essential domestic appliance in Catalan homes until well into the second half of the 20th century. First thing in the morning, the housewife lit the oven with leaves or paper and kept it going all day, as it served as a stove, oven and a means to heat the room. The main fuel used was coal, which could be purchased at the numerous coalyards that were found in every city.
