A fragment of a piece of plasterwork which used to decorate the walls of the Andalusine palace, Formós Castle, 11th century

Fragment of a frieze in which part of an epigraph can be seen.

In Kufic script, the following interpretation can be made of the text of this fragment: “I have submitted myself completely to Allah” (verse 20, sura 3, of the Quran).

The use of the epigraph as art in the Andalsine world is related to the fact that Islam prohibits figurative representations. In their place is the calligraphic representation of the names of the Prophet or Allah. However, the use of this verse must be attributed to the presence of a direct descendant of the Prophet in the Palace, presumably Hisham III, the last Caliph of Cordoba, who was exiled to the lands of Lerida in 1031.
