Fragments of poly-lobed arches from the Andalusine Palace, Formós Castle, 11th century

Poly-lobed arches were part of the architectural and ornamental decoration of Balaguer Palace in the 11th century.

The colour palette is one of the most exclusive of the Middle Ages. Blue stands out, which was made with lapislazuli, a pigment that was extracted from the semiprecious stone of the same name, making it highly labourious to obtain. It comes from the quarries of Badakhshan in the north of modern-day Afghanistan. It was treated as a highly exclusive luxury material, the price of which exceeded that of pure gold.
