Several types of Stroh violins were patented between 1900 and 1949; they were often used in jazz and dance orchestras in the United States and Europe, especially in recording studios. The Stroh violin has a membrane mounted on the side of the bridge, which transmits the vibration to a metal bell similar to a metal wind instrument or a gramophone, which replaces the typical wooden box of the violin.
