The harpsichord was one of the main instruments responsible for the development of instrumental music in the baroque period: by virtue of its versatility it served both as the basso continuo or solo instrument. This harpsichord is a chordophone played using a keyboard. The sound is produced by the vibration of the strings plucked by plectrums. It is one of only three surviving exemplars by the prestigious instrument maker Christian Zell.
