The musical culture of Indonesia is dominated by the gamelan, a group of percussion instruments in which the metallic sound of the gongs are arranged in a pyramidal hierarchy under a principal one. In a pentatonic system, the tempo and intervals are dictated by a cosmology between the different types of instruments and the voice, often used to imitate natural sounds or for spiritual purposes. The Museum has a gamelan in the interactive room which can be played.
