Wall covering with a Chinese decorative motif, 1700-1725, cordwain, gilded leather, decorated and polychromed, 285 × 365 cm, Bordeaux (France)

A large cordwain wall covering. The gilding was done using twenty irons of different shapes. The decorative result reveals two types: the first is used to cover the background, and the second to accentuate and highlight the painted motifs. The decorative theme is in line with the taste of the time, with natural scenes depicting bucolic gardens and animals, mainly birds and butterflies, very characteristic of the style of Louis XIV. One unique feature is the presence of a large Chinese pavilion to the left of the vase, which places us in a context with a predilection for Chinese decorations.
