Case. Books of hours

A 15th-century case that probably stored books of hours, engraved and polychromed cordwain with iron, 10 × 25 × 22 cm, Catalonia

A leather-lined case with engraved motifs and the remains of polychrome. It is reinforced by three iron bands with a triple floral decoration. These bands decorated with flowers are highly commonplace in the Catalan output of the 14th to 15th centuries. The museum’s same collection contains other very similar examples in type and decoration.

These kinds of boxes have very flat proportions but are sufficiently large to keep or carry a book of hours, instead of jewellery or coins, as other similar boxes do.
